How to track startup angel investments
Angel holdings often begin as a SAFE or note and become harder to reconstruct after financing rounds.
Preserve the instrument and provenance
Keep the signed instrument, amount and date, valuation cap or discount if applicable, conversion evidence, resulting shares or ownership percentage, issuer updates, transfer restrictions, and tax documents. Do not treat a funding-round headline as your position’s verified market value.
Unknown ownership is a question
If conversion occurred but the ownership statement is missing, request the cap table or account statement that confirms shares and class. Record each new financing or conversion as a dated change instead of overwriting history.
